Rather than employ some kind of bizarre convertion mechanism to bring tablet functionality to a laptop -- like the Dell XPS 12 or Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 -- the S400 simply whacks a touchscreen into a regular laptop.  

While the VivoBook's 0.83-inch thickness and 4-pound weight stretch the definition of an ultrabook, the Asus is definitely more sleek and portable than the average 14-inch notebook. The exterior of the VivoBook looks mighty attractive considering its wallet-friendly price, with a silver Asus logo sitting in the center of an all-black brushed aluminum lid similar to the ones on the older HP dv6 laptops. It's a bit of a fingerprint magnet, though.

You get to enjoy the gestures and live tiles that make up the colourful Windows 8 operating system, switching easily to the keyboard when you need to get on with some typing.

Hitting such a competitive cost naturally entailed making some sacrifices, though they aren't as onerous as one would expect. In fact, the VivoBook S400CA (or S400CA-UH51, to give it its full model number) is a startlingly decent example of a mainstream Windows 8 notebook done right, even with its few niggling flaws.  
 

The ASUS VIVOBOOK S400's shell is constructed primarily from metal, and has a deep grey/black lid. It's far from an exciting look, but the brushed effect Asus has given it saves it from being yawn-inducingly dull. At the very least it looks functional -- I wouldn't hesitate to pull it out in a meeting -- although it's not likely to catch the eye of anyone in the coffee shop.

That black lid is an absolute magnet for fingerprints though. You'll want to keep a polishing cloth of some kind handy if you want it to maintain its professional look. Aside from this, the design is very much par for the course. Silver metal is in abundance under the lid, and the bottom of the machine is clad in black rubber. The keys are set directly into the base -- there's no separate keyboard tray -- which, together with the edge-to-edge glass of the screen, help make it look more expensive. 

The metal shell makes it feel particularly sturdy. There's minimal flex in the lid and none at all in the wrist rest. The hinge too feels sturdy and doesn't bend when opening. It's quite stiff, but it needs to be in order to avoid falling down when you're using the touchscreen. It certainly feels burly enough to put up with a few knocks inside a rucksack, so don't hesitate to take it down to Starbucks.

Lenovo ThinkPad Twist S230u laptop review

The advantage: The Lenovo ThinkPad Twist S230u laptop  is a solidly built laptop-tablet hybrid with all the security features your IT department needs. Thanks to dual batteries in the tablet and keyboard base, it can run for a full workday.

The disadvantage:  The Helix is stuck with Intel's less efficient previous generation of CPUs, making it feel especially expensive.

Conclusion: Even with the best detachable-screen hybrid hinge we've seen, the older CPU and high price of ThinkPad Twist S230u laptop make the ThinkPad Helix a hybrid for a select audience only. This convertible PC plays a laptop perfectly, but its weight and size make its less useful as a tablet.

 The last Lenovo laptop through our labs was the gorgeously thin and light X1 Carbon. The X1 nicely illustrated the company’s ability to deviate from its ‘solid but boring’ design principles without entirely throwing out the traditional ThinkPad aesthetic. The Twist does the same, sticking to the ThinkPad look whilst putting a bit of a spin on the form factor.

Opening the Twist up, you might be forgiven for thinking it’s just a regular laptop with an undersized hinge. However, the big difference – so aptly conveyed in the name – is that the Twist’s screen can be rotated 180 degrees. That gives you a number of options, the most obvious being to close the screen back-to-keyboard leaving you with a hefty ol’ tablet. However, you can also lean the screen back, using the keyboard as a picture-frame stand, in what Lenovo calls ‘stand mode’. Alternatively, you can turn the whole thing upside-down and use it in ‘tent mode’, if you just need a screen and don’t have much desk space.

Removing the screen from the base, flipping it around, and reattaching it has a couple of obvious uses. One is to create a kiosk-style display, with the screen pointing toward your audience without a keyboard or touch pad in the way. I've used Lenovo's own Yoga 13 like this many times, and if you share a lot of onscreen content, it can be a useful feature, especially if you can still drive the system from behind, as you still have access to the keyboard and touch pad.


As a tablet, the ThinkPad Twist is far from a model specimen. Its 1.25kg weight is light for a laptop, but far too heavy for a tablet. Holding it one-handed for any length of time is draining, but the 12.5-inch screen size makes it just a bit too large to hold it two-handed and control with your thumbs. It does work well laid flat on a table, which would be a good way to share the display in roundtable meetings. However, low brightness and a highly reflective screen limit the viewing angle. Unless you’re looking straight down at it, you won’t see all that much.

Performance in our comprehensive suite of benchmarks was dead on the average for Ultrabooks based on the same processor, except in storage-based tests where its hard drive/SSD hybrid setup simply can’t compete with SSD-only solutions.

Conclusion: At 11.9mm, the Acer Aspire S7 is incredibly slim and looks fantastic in its crisp, white suit. The addition of the touchscreen means that navigating through Windows 8's big tiles is delightfully simple. Sadly though, its performance, while good, isn't as blazingly fast as you'd hope for considering the high price.

 

Design and Feature:
 

 On the plus side, Acer Aspire S7  has a great touchscreen, letting you navigate your way around the large tiles of Windows 8 much more comfortably than you can with a regular touchpad. 

If design, portability and the touchscreen are of critical importance to you, the S7 is a good, if pricey, option to consider. Dell's XPS 12 offers only slightly slower performance, but it's still portable and costs £500 less. If you want a Windows 8 ultrabook with a bit more junk in the trunk, the Asus Zenbook U500 delivers blistering performance, although it doesn't have a touchscreen.

It's 323mm wide and 224mm deep, which is pretty standard for a 13-inch ultrabook. You certainly won't struggle to slide it into a backpack. It weighs in at just under 1.3kg so it's perfectly light enough to carry on your back for at least a few hours without your spine snapping. 

Silver is the name of the game under the lid, with silver keys set into a base clad in yet more silver. It's a plain look, but inoffensive enough to avoid offsetting the attractiveness of the outside. If you're trying to make a real impression somewhere fancy, just make sure the lid is always facing outwards.

Design and features 
The most apt comparison is with other better-than-HD systems, such as the MacBook Pro and Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus. The Yoga 2 is not quite as slick or solidly built as those, but it also costs less for a similar Core i5, 128GB configuration, making it the least expensive way to get into higher-resolution mobile computing.
Hybrids and convertibles fall into two categories. Some are primarily tablets that can spend part of their time as laptoplike devices, while others are primarily laptops that can double as part-time tablets. For example, the recent Sony Vaio Tap 11 is maybe 75 percent tablet and 25 percent laptop. The Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is perhaps a 60-40 tablet/laptop. On the other hand, the Lenovo Yoga 2 is 75 percent laptop, and you’ll use the other modes less frequently. Frankly, if you need something that’s a full-time tablet, look elsewhere.
In laptop mode, however, the Yoga 2 is a joy to use. Lenovo is known for putting serious resources into keyboard R&D and usage testing, and the current design is found (with a few variations) across most of Lenovo’s consumer and business laptops. It takes the standard flat-topped island-style keyboard and adds a slight curve to the bottom, which helps catch nearly missed keystrokes. The finish on the keys feels softer and the keys themselves less clacky than on the original Yoga. My only real complaint is that a shortened right Shift key has carried over from the first Yoga, and I still find it hard to get acclimated to. This new keyboard is also backlit, which is a big upgrade for people who use their laptops in dim coffee shops and commuter train cars.
There’s also the problem that spans all Windows 8 tablets, which is that Windows 8/8.1 is still not a 100 percent tablet-friendly OS, and rarely knows how to organize information efficiently in portrait mode, which is how the iPad has trained a generation of consumers to hold a tablet.

The SONY Vaio Flip 15 is a slim 15-inch midsize laptop with a silver brushed-aluminum lid and keyboard tray and black accents. It’s one of the sharper-looking 15-inch laptops I’ve seen this year, and has a bit of a 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro vibe.
The interior is eye-catching in that it’s nearly monochromatic. The same brushed-metal look from the lid extends to the wrist rest and area surrounding the keyboard, which has silver keys against a silver base, and is backlit in white, creating a bright, clean overall look.
The lid and keyboard tray both extend out from the sides of the base slightly, creating the optical illusion that the system is even thinner than it is. At a hair over five pounds, this isn’t a carry-it-around-every-day laptop, but it’s fine for occasional trips to the office or coffee shop.
The keyboard is similar to Sony’s other island-style keyboards, a style the company has been using longer than even Apple. The key size and spacing are excellent, although there’s a lot of unused space on all sides, meaning that a larger keyboard or a separate numberpad could easily fit.
Sony packs in a lot of bonus software with the Vaio Flip (and much of it also appears on other Vaio laptops as well). The highlights include ArtRage Studio, a painting and drawing program, and Movie Studio, Acid, and Sound Forge, which are long-standing video and audio recording/editing apps. There’s an optional active stylus available, which seems like a natural tie-in to using ArtRage in the system’s tablet mode, although we really do live in a post-stylus world now, for the most part.
