LENOVO Miix2- 8 inch tablet review

There's a long-term trend in technology for each generation of new tech to be bigger and more feature-packed than the last. But tablet PCs such as the Lenovo Miix 2 8 resolutely buck that trend. In some ways spurred on by the success of the iPad mini, manufacturers are looking to make smaller devices than previous generations, with 8-inch screens appearing to be the sweet spot.

In many ways this makes a lot of sense. Larger screens such as those found on the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 or the Sony Xperia Tablet Z are excellent for watching films and playing games on, but tablets with smaller screens – and therefore smaller overall body size and weight – have proven to be much more comfortable to hold, easier to carry and generally more convenient for day-to-day tasks.

With its low price and decent performance, the Miix 2 8 from Lenovo is an affordable tablet option for who need a Windows 8 tablet that won't the bank.

The 8-inch display doesn't have the resolution chops to hang with the Nexus 7 or iPad Air, but it still has "excellent color and contrast," according to PC Mag. And thanks to that 8-inch display, TechSpot finds it "thin and reasonably light."

That portable exterior is joined on the inside by an Intel Atom processor and 2GB of RAM -- which isn't much, but it's just enough to take care of your daily needs, with PC World finding the performance "impressive" while TechRadar says it's "solid and dependable," though multitasking too much can "slow things down quite dramatically." As long as you keep your expectations in check, the 8-inch Miix 2 is a reasonable Windows 8.1 tablet at a reasonable cost.

Reviews from  LENOVO Miix2- 8 inch tablet owners:

(1) This tablet is an affordable Windows 8 tablet with good LENOVO Miix2- 8 tablet battery life and features. Just make sure you always have access to the Internet, as local storage is a little light on this tablet.

(2) With its attractive, compact design and sub-£300 price tag the Miix 2 8 is one of the new Windows tablets that provides a more affordable alternative to the Microsoft Surface.

(3) This new Miix 2 seems to have been dealt a better hand, as RT has been swept under the rug and the Bay Trail chip is restoring faith in Intel's tablet capabilities. Compared side by side with an iPad mini, Apple’s smaller tablet certainly feels more premium than the Lenovo; that’s where a metal casing comes in. It’s not to say the Miix2 necessarily comes across as cheap.

(4)  Is any vendor willing to mix it up with Asus' hot-selling Transformer Book T100? Lenovo is, with a matched set of Miix 2 detachables—a 10.1-inch with "Bay Trail" Atom and an 11.6-inch with Core i5 power, with laptop and tablet plus a stand or presentation mode the Asus device lacks.

Review of DELL E7240 laptop

Dell is one of the first manufacturers migrating to the new Haswell architecture in the business range this year. The Dell Latitude E6540 was one of the first business notebooks featuring Intel's fourth generation Core i CPUs. Meanwhile there are also competitors from other manufacturers, e.g. the Lenovo ThinkPad S440 available, while Dell has gradually updated its complete product range.

The Dell Latitude E7240 is a mobile 12-inch ultrabook, which should balance the advantages of a slim design and the high demands of professional business customers.

However, Dell currently only offers a limited number of options in its online shop. Apart from further CPU options, a touch-capable full HD display, more RAM, integrated WWAN or more storage capacity should be optionally available in the future. Our test device features an Intel Core i5-4200U-CPU with integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400, 4 GB RAM, a 128 GB SSD and a matte HD display. In Dell's online shop, the net price was about 930 Euros (approximately 1110 Euros including VAT/~$1256 and $1499 respectively) after deduction of all discounts at the beginning of the test. Meanwhile the base price of a slightly different model increased to 1069 Euros (~$1444) without VAT.

Dell advertises that this laptop meets the MIL-STD-810G standard in a video about the Latitude 7000 series, but it does not specify what portions of the standard it fulfills. MIL-STD-810G consists of tests with extreme temperatures, air pressure, sunlight, moisture, chemicals, accelerations, and vibrations.

The build quality of the Dell Latitude E7240 is very good; the palm rests show no depressions when pressed with a finger, the display hinge holds the screen safely in place and the design of the case appears to be solid.

Although the weight is not especially low, it is still very portable at 1340 g (~3 pounds). The replaceable battery and the conventional docking port are advantages.

The connectivity is good for an ultrabook. Apart from USB 3.0 ports (1x with charging function), which became standard in the meanwhile, the Dell Latitude E7240 laptop features a standard HDMI interface and a mini DisplayPort for digital connection of external displays. In addition, it has a card reader and a conventional Gigabit LAN interface. In our opinion, the interface layout is good. There are sufficient interfaces for connecting the usual peripherals like printer, external display, hard drives or optical drive on the rear side without disturbing cables left or right of the notebook. The right side houses another USB port, which can be used to quickly connect a digital camera or a smartphone. In addition, a card reader is placed there, making it easily accessible.

Our test model does not have a built-in Bluetooth module. Apparently, the Dell Latitude E7240 only supports Bluetooth, if it is already integrated in the WLAN module. For example, Dell's Wireless 1601 does, but it is not yet available. The same is true for the WWAN modules (HSPA+ or LTE) mentioned in the specs.

An HD web cam, a dual array microphone (both in the display bezel) and a standard Gigabit Ethernet port complete the communication equipment. Despite focusing on premium quality, the web cam's image quality is only modest and might only fulfill basic requirements of video conferences. Colors hardly look natural, there is visible noise and brightness differences worsen the impression.

Review of DELL Latitude 10-ST2e tablet

The DELL Latitude 10-ST2e tablet is a Windows 8 tablet that's tailor-made for business users. It's not only durable, it offers a host of security and manageability features IT managers will appreciate. Snap in the 4-cell battery, and you get a device that lasts all day -- and most of the night. Starting at $499 ($704 as configured), the Latitude 10-ST2e tablet also works with an optional pen for taking notes on the go and using other pen-enabled apps, while the optional dock lets you connect a larger monitor.

In its black, slate-style design, the Dell Latitude 10-ST2e tablet is very similar to the Microsoft Surface Pro, Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2, and other Windows 8 tablets. All have black bodies, with edge-to-edge glass over a touch-sensitive display, with a handful of ports along the outer edge.

If the front of the Latitude 10 is attractive in its simplicity, the rear is anything but. It's not that it's ugly, it's just too busy. Positioned horizontally across the top of the rear panel is the tablet's 8-megapixel camera and LED flash, below which is a glossy black Dell logo. To the right of that is a Windows Pro 8 sticker. Below the Dell logo is the Latitude 10's large removable battery panel, which is flanked on either side by the stereo speakers. Finally, underneath that is the battery's slide lock.

By itself, the Latitude 10-ST2e doesn't have much in the way of ports and connections, with only one USB port, a Mini-HDMI jack, an SD card slot, and a separate Micro-USB port for charging accessories.Adding the optional dock gives you four additional USB ports, plus HDMI and Ethernet, making it pretty handy for converting the Latitude 10 for desktop use. But, as we're dealing with the Intel Atom platform here, all the USB ports are the slower 2.0 variety, not the faster 3.0 version found in Intel Core i-series devices.

While the Latitude 10-ST2e looks and feel a lot like other Windows 8 tablets, even ones with faster Core i5 processors, when we ran our standard PC benchmark tests the difference was obvious. Atom-powered systems, such as the Latitude 10, Acer W510, or HP Envy X2, were much slower, with the Dell taking nearly five times as long as the Surface Pro to run our multitasking benchmark.

On the LAPTOP Magazine Battery Test, which includes continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi with the display set to 40 percent brightness, the DELL Latitude 10-ST2e tablet battery lasted 7 hours and 16 minutes, just barely beating out the tablet category average of 7:08 and much better than the HP Envy X2's 6:52 time. Still, the Latitude 10-ST2e tablet couldn't match the Acer Iconia W510's 8:49.

Review of Apple MacBook Air 13''

Advantages:

While minor, the small upgrade to the stock CPU in Apple's 13-inch MacBook Air results in improved performance. The multitouch trackpad is still the industry's best, and even better, the 13-inch Air now starts at $999, which is $100 less than the previous model. And it has a good Apple MacBook Air 13''battery life.

Disadvantges:

Newer features such as touchscreens and higher-resolution displays are still missing. The ultrabook competition is catching up, in terms of design.

The MacBook Air's screen, in contrast, is nothing like as 'future proof'. It isn't downright bad, but it's certainly nothing more than adequate and quite a step behind what we'd expect from laptop at this price and one with Apple's logo on it.

The resolution debate is something of a distraction, actually. A retina screen is, arguably, a stretch too far right now on cost and performance grounds (it would make the MacBook Air more expensive and would likely reduce battery life considerably) and the 16:10 aspect (1,440 x 900) screen means a switch to a 1080p screen to match rivals would necessitate a re-design. A 1,900 x 1,200 resolution would be ideal, but we suspect Apple can't find anyone to make such a screen at a reasonable price. Apple has, more than likely, worked itself into something or a corner here.

MacBook Air 13''battery life remains a big selling point, and when you consider the cost of the base model has come down from $1,199 to $999 in two years, the 13-inch MacBook Air is, despite not being the newest design on the block, still one of the most universally useful laptops you can buy.

Easy to use, beautiful to look at, and engineered to take full advantage of your Mac hardware, OS X Yosemite is the world’s most advanced desktop operating system. It comes with an amazing collection of apps for the things you do every day. And it makes your Mac and iOS devices work together in amazing ways.
